Duke Concussion Clinic
Overview
Duke Sports Medicine has developed a sports concussion clinic to provide expert care for the management of concussions sustained during athletic events to expedite a safe return to sport. Unlike musculoskeletal injuries, concussive injuries are harder to diagnose and manage due to the variability of symptoms that present with injury. It is important to have a concussion diagnosed and managed by healthcare providers who have experience in the treatment of concussions. The Duke Sports Concussion Clinic is staffed by experts in sports medicine, neurology, physical therapy, and neuropsychology.
Multidisciplinary Staff
Primary Care Sports Medicine
The Duke Primary Care Sports Medicine team offers expert initial management for sports concussions. These physicians provide care for the Duke athletes, community athletes, and many of the local high school athletes that sustain sports injuries. All of our staff is experienced in the management of concussions and will perform a thorough evaluation to determine the best treatment options specific to your symptoms. This includes education on specific return to school/work/play instructions as well as completion of state-mandated return to play paperwork for high school athletes. If your physician determines that further referral to physical therapy or neurology is warranted, they will facilitate the scheduling of additional appointments. Appointments are available at the Finch Yeager, Page Road, and North Duke Street clinic locations.
Neurology
A small percentage of concussions may have a prolonged recovery or more neurological involvement that may require additional work-up with a neurologist. Our sports neurologists are available for referrals through our Sports Concussion Clinic to help provide the specialty management for these specific cases.
Recent research has shown that physical therapy can help address symptoms that present following concussion including neck pain, headache, dizziness, and balance impairments. Our sports physical therapists are specially trained to identify factors that may be contributing to these symptoms and implement treatments and exercises to help expedite the resolution of symptoms. Management of concussion symptoms may include manual techniques, vestibular exercises, and proprioceptive/balance training. Appointments with sports physical therapy for concussion symptoms can be scheduled through the sports concussion clinic.
