Tracy R. Ray, MD
Sports Medicine Specialist
Orange High School Team Physician
Dr. Tracy Ray is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery and the Director of Primary Care Sports Medicine for Duke Sports Medicine.
Dr. Ray arrived at Duke in 2012 after 12 years in practice in Birmingham, Ala. He received his MD at the Medical College of Georgia in 1993 and completed his Family Medicine residency training in Tuscaloosa, Ala. His fellowship training in sports medicine was completed at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio in 1997.
Currently, Dr. Ray directs the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program at Duke and provides physician leadership for the outreach program of Duke Sports Medicine to Durham and the surrounding area high schools. He also provides coverage to Duke Athletics when needed.
ABOUT ME
I’ve always been involved in sports as a participant and a spectator. While pursuing sports medicine during my primary care training, I quickly saw how important it is that people who experience a sports injury receive appropriate care as soon as possible. That’s why I’m leading the Duke Orthopedic initiative to provide same day/24-hour access to appointments when people experience an orthopedic injury or condition. Whether an individual is competing at the highest level or simply a recreational athlete, returning these athletes to “play” and assuring their health and success is extremely rewarding. When I’m not keeping people safe from injury, or helping an injured player return to their fullest potential, I enjoy being active and outdoors with my wife and children.

Duke Sports Medicine Community Outreach
Members of the Duke Sports Medicine team go to extreme measures to help school-based sports teams within the service region achieve their own personal best.
The team works with athletes from several public high schools in Durham, Orange, and Wake counties, as well as several area private schools and public middle schools.
The entire Duke Sports Medicine team have formed close collaborative partnerships with athletic directors and head athletic trainers at area schools to provide access to valuable Duke services including multidisciplinary health care and professional training.
Services OfferedAt each school, Duke provides a physical therapist (PT), often dually certified as an athletic trainer (ATC), to work directly with the athletes, the school's certified athletic trainer, and coaches. These PT/ATCs are at the schools throughout the year performing services, pro bono, for athletes of all sports.
Services at the participating schools include providing detailed assessment and treatment of injuries, educating athletes about injuries and injury prevention, assisting the school’s certified athletic trainer with coverage of sporting events, and expediting physician appointments for athletes who choose to see a Duke physician.
Duke Sports Medicine physicians also provide on-field medical coverage for football games at the schools. In the spring, Duke sponsors a physicals event where athletes can obtain a pre-participation physical for minimal cost.
